"When are you speaking to the Haim sisters?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: The sender also desires to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. A host of high-profile supporters have openly petitioned for the position.

One thing is obvious something is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy hopefuls.

Similar to the best bands, they're a inseparable trio. Their videos often show them walking in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such unfettered joy you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the ultimate honour. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate young girls to start a band."

"So all are welcome to be the next part of the family."

Grammy Milestone

The band have called into a break, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the honor resonates with the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major milestone," continues Alana. "However we're just thankful for the female artists that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The record emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The themes detail breakups and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I adore summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed toughness called for a new sound – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The band's honesty inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their dating horror stories.

One man left Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Path

One can easily sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an worldwide audience.

But the sister act will consistently be their primary priority.

"We have been performing since I was a young child," says Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
