Lando Norris edged out fellow driver and championship contender the Australian for the quickest lap in the final moments of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who took the title advantage from Piastri by just one point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix a fortnight back, outpaced the Melbourne-born driver by a mere 0.023s. Before then, Piastri had been the leading McLaren for most of the session before sprint qualifying scheduled for 18:30 GMT. Max Verstappen, the other racer in the championship fight, sitting with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, finished in 17th position as his Red Bull team followed a different programme. Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to crash, albeit lightly, when he lost control at Turn Four during the early running. The Japanese slid over the track edges before rotating through the run-off area, and was lucky to avoid just a slight brush of the barrier. Ferrari's the seven-time champion also lost it, at the very end of the session, spinning around through the high-speed corner before the last turn on to the pit straight. The veteran finished practice in P19, one place behind team-mate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren drivers were well clear of the remaining drivers, with Nico Hulkenberg's car P3, 0.619 seconds off Piastri's best. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, with the Sauber of Bortoleto fifth from Mercedes' George Russell and the Alpine of Pierre Gasly and the Williams of Carlos Sainz.
