Over 20 Olympic champions, coaches and other world-class competitors have signed a statement calling for a halt to the death penalty of a boxing titleholder and trainer, who is on death row in the nation.

Increasing Worldwide Condemnation

During increasing worldwide anger over the country's escalating use of the death penalty as a instrument of oppression, the powerfully expressed appeal censures the government's decision to confirm the execution order of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The athlete, thirty, from the city in north-east Iran, was arrested for participating in nationwide protests in the year 2019 and indicted of aiding an opposition group. He has passed five years in incarceration, where he has been mistreated and held in isolation.

Apprehension and Flawed Legal Process

The athlete was taken into custody in March 2020. The charges against him comprised “spreading corruption on Earth through incendiarism and damage of public property”. Call to UN

The call to halt the boxer's death sentence follows a previous appeal to the global human rights chief for rights, backed by more than one hundred human rights experts and groups, calling for measures to stop the athlete’s capital punishment.

Capital Punishment Escalation

Based on findings, there is an “death penalty surge in Iran, which has achieved alarming proportions”. In 2023, the government sentenced at least eight hundred fifty-three people – a forty-eight percent rise on 2022. In the prior period, statistics showed 972 deaths, constituting the maximum count since 2015. Over 800 people have been executed so far in 2025.
